UL’s courses are designed by PhD-level experts in adult learning who employ proven instructional design methodology. This methodology enables deep processing and understanding of the information being presented, and offers a greater potential for the learner to actually modify their behavior — the true goal of effective training. Our e-learning philosophy is based on Mastery Learning. Through this instructionally-engineered approach, learners must interact with the course content and demonstrate proficiency in order to advance through the course and to show completion or be qualified on the course content. Our Mastery Learning course design supports optimal instructional and user-interface design via our Human Information Processing (HIP). Our courses support adult learning styles and enhance behavior change in a variety of ways.

The following instructional design elements are incorporated into our courses to efficiently and effectively achieve knowledge transfer and promote intended behaviors:

  • An always visible course menu on the left hand side of the screen helps the learner comprehend the course structure, locate information, and navigate more easily through the course.

  • Objectives of the courses are presented as “key questions”, and simple, high-level answers designed for all adult learning levels are provided.

  • Details are presented using interactive devices to “chunk” and “layer” the information, which has been proven to be an optimal way to build and reinforce knowledge, and change behavior, in adult learners.

  • The effective use of animations and graphics, high levels of interactivity, and the variation of instructional treatment for varying complexity levels of learning (i.e. facts, principles, concepts, and strategies), all which help to reinforce learning.

    • All graphics and multimedia elements are directly related to the stated purpose and learning goals of the course, and provide complementary learning. Graphics are well designed by multimedia artists who effectively use color and rendering to help focus the learner on exactly the concept being taught.

    • All text elements are rendered in clean, clear fonts that are used consistently throughout the course to provide information that is pleasing, compatible and easy-to-read.

  • Courses contain narration. Learners can elect to listen to the audio or read the text on the screen. This accommodates a variety of adult learning styles, as different persons learn content using different senses, including auditory and visual.
